What Men Can Do to Stop Rape

  • Be conscious about our word choices.
  • Interrupt when we hear these words being used.
  • Teach and encourage boys and men to adopt a full range of intimate behaviors, not just relying on sexual intercourse to meet their needs.
  • Model, teach and encourage boys and men to find power in healthy respectful behavior.
  • Teach and encourage women to reclaim ownership of their bodies and of their sexuality. Their sexuality is not for men's pleasure.
  • Honor males and females who choose to be abstinent.
  • Honor and support a multitude of sexual orientations.
  • Make a personal commitment to treat women with respect.
  • Reject traditional stereotypes about men that devalue emotions and "feminine" qualities.
  • Speak out against sexist comments, jokes or inappropriate sexual behavior.
  • Never pressure a woman for sex. Communicate your desires clearly and ask your partner to do the same. Do not make assumptions about what she wants based on how she is dressed.
  • Start or participate in a discussion group about men's roles in ending violence.
  • You can e-mail, call or write your Senators and Representatives and tell them that you support legislation aimed at ending violence against women. (www.ncadv.org)
  • Check out the Voices Not Victims campaign on your campus. (www.voicesnotvictims.org)
  • Become a Peer Educator at the Campus Violence Prevention Program. (CVPP)
  • Take a women's studies class
